R-LA were commissioned to propose a design for the main courtyard at
Putney High School, fronting their new Performing Arts Centre.
The proposed space responds to the geometries of the site and creates an
informal link between the existing main school premises and the new
performance building. A low level amphitheatre links the buildings to
the existing stage area and creates an active contemporary space in the
middle of the courtyard.
The outdoor dedicated path for lunchtime queuing to the canteen, is
paved with text engraved granite slabs evoking important works of
science or art. The path is flanked by a gallery display of artistic or
scientific artefacts. Queuing time becomes an opportunity for
inspiration.
