THE WATER GARDENS LIGHTING DESIGN

Tyburnia, The Hyde Park ESTATE, london

The Church Commissioners instructed Refolo Landscape Architects to design a 21st Century re-interpretation of the 4,000sqm podium deck of The Water Gardens, a luxury Brutalist Estate in Tyburnia, north of Hyde Park in London.

As part of this wider commission, Refolo were instructed to provide a lighting design. The gardens were very much lacking in night lights.

The all new lighting design aims to highlight the brutalist texture and linear rhythm of the garden.

The alternating shining and matt banding of the new paving design gives the illusion of water filtering through the surface.

This is no illusion as the SuDs cell system does harvest water through the paving as part of the planting irrigation system.

The linear architectural linear rhythm is emphesized though the lighting design.

Subtle lights show the brutalist texture of the bricks.

The strong brutalist lines from the timber planks used to shape the concrete into an art form are highlighted by hidden LED strips beneath the overhang.

The aim is to high the light units and allow the luminance to emphesise texture

Regular water jets intersect the parallel lines of the bridge balustrade. At night this interplay of shade and light creates dynamic patters

At night the brutalism soul of the garden is emphesized.
